Competition news

Directors Shield, Bowl and Pete Kennedy Memorial Trophy Competitions

In challenging conditions 57 players participated in the re-arranged Directors Shield, Bowl and Pete Kennedy Memorial Trophy Competitions on Sunday.

Directors Shield Winner Todd Parker Hunt, Todd’s score of nett 65 was the lowest and stand out score of the day. 2nd was Chris Williams with a nett 68 (CB) 3rd Tom Stevens nett 68.

Directors Bowl Lowest Gross Winner was Tom Stevens with a gross 74, 2nd was Brett Moggridge with a gross 75.

The Pete Kennedy Winner was Trevor Graham with a nett 68. In 2nd was Graham Kelly with nett 69 and 3rd went to Giulio Viglieno nett 71 (CB).

Winter Open Series

In the October Winter Open Series 1 we had 64 players taking part including 11 visitors.
Scoring proved tough with 37 points enough to win this.

3rd Christine Clark 36 Pts (CB)
4th Mike Price 36 Pts (CB)
5th Martin McMahon 36 Pts (CB)

In the visitor section Stephen Eaves from Hinkley Golf Club was the winner with 34 Pts.

Oxfordshire Foursomes Results

On Saturday in the final match of the season the Scratch team were defeated 3-0 away at Feldon Valley.

In the final standings Kirtlington finished 3rd in section 2 with 4 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats.

This Saturday Kirtlington will be hosting the final of the Oxfordshire Scratch Knock Out which is between Tadmarton Heath & Frilford Heath.

Junior news

Junior Half Term Competitions

At the end of the October half term we held two competitions for the juniors, on Friday it was the Junior Three Club Challenge which was decided on countback.

1st Markos Carr 33 Pts CB)
2nd George Slater 33 Pts.

This was also the last qualifying event for the Junior Order of Merit, well done to Leon Slade who won this with 39 Points, 2nd Ellie Mitchell 36 Pts 3rd Markos Carr 34 Pts.

In the Junior Shield on Saturday 5 juniors took part, with this being won by with Ritchie Dawe 33 points, 2nd George Slater 31 Pts (CB) 3rd Markos Carr 31 Pts.

Ladies Medal - Tuesday 30th October

On Tuesday 30th it was the Ladies Medal with 15 players taking part, top 3 were:

Tuesday 23rd October saw the Ladies Poppy Medal being played and the winner was Maggie Day.

Ladies Fashion Show Success

Last Friday the ladies held a fashion show at the club, here are some photos from the evening.

Seniors report

Seniors Roll Up

On 18th October a total of 39 players competed in the monthly roll-up. With favourable weather conditions there were some excellent scores recorded with Ray Brooks winning with an outstanding score of 43 points.

Full results were:

1st Ray Brooks 43 points.
2nd Lim Lodge 39 points.
3rd John Parsons 38 points.

Seniors October Medal

On Thursday 26th October a total of 64 seniors took part in the monthly medal. In excellent playing condition over a third of the entry played to their handicap or better.

Kevin Crumell posted the lowest gross score of 78 (nett 70) but this was not good enough to be place in the top 10 in Division 1.

Division 1 was won by Eddie Birney whose nett 66 won on countback from Francis Kelley. In Division 2 scores were even better with 3 players scoring a nett 63 or better.

1st Eddie Birney 77 – 18 66.
2nd – Francis Kelley 83 – 17 66 (cb).
3rd – John Duffin 81 – 14 67 (cb).

Division 2

1st – Robert James 88 – 28 62.
2nd – Paul Wilkinson 93 – 30 63 (cb).
3rd – Peter Marsh 86 – 23 66 (cb).

What do you take from this?

As golfers, there's nothing more satisfying than a shot which is perfectly executed - even if it is a rare occurrence for many of us. It could be a booming drive which splits the fairway down the middle, or maybe a wedge shot which stops dead, two feet away from the hole. In fact, when you consider how often we use our wedges during a round of golf - see the graph below - the latter is something that we should all be striving to achieve.

So, what do you take from the graph above? In our eyes, it highlights just how important your short game is. We see a lot of you spending time hitting balls on the range, which is great, but don't neglect the less glamorous side of the game when practising - it's where your score is 'made'.
