In Breast Cancer Awareness month, we also wanted to raise some money for Breast Cancer Now having a raffle and cake sale. Thank you to everyone for taking part and contributing to this.

Ladies EG Medal

In the Ladies EG Medal on Tuesday, there were 22 players taking part (CSS 73). The winner on the day was Rita Murray with a nett 72. In second place was Margaret Moggridge nett 75 (c/b) and in 3rd place was Jackie Thompson nett 75 (lowest gross 85).

Gents competition news

Gents Weekend Stableford

In the Gents Weekend Stableford, 101 players took part (CSS 37 Points both days). The overall winner was Chris McKechnie scoring 41 points beating Josh Berrie on countback.

Top three in each division:

Division one - (40 players) 1st Andy Woodley 39 points (countback); 2nd George Slater 39 points; 3rd Lewis Fraser 38 points (c/b).

Division two - (26 players) 1st Chris McKechnie 41 points; 2nd Rob Allen 39 points; 3rd Adam Smith 39 points.

Division three - (35 players) 1st Josh Berrie 41 points; 2nd Andy Brown 40 points; 3rd Graham Brown 36 points.

The return of the Kirtlington Golf Club Winter Series

This weekend is the return of the Winter Open Series comprising once again of six-weekend competitions.

Tee times still available for this Saturday, 26 and Sunday, 27 October - if you are looking to book a tee time or join a group, please let the pro shop know.

It’s just £5 entry for Members (£3 Junior Members).

Prizes for top five - First prize will be approximately £100 in pro shop vouchers (depending on entry numbers).

Seniors report

Seniors' October Roll-up

On Thursday, 17 October, the Seniors’ Roll-up took the form of a par-bogey competition. A total of 22 players braved the challenging conditions and only two managed to beat the course with Steve Dolton winning by three posting four-up.

Full results were:

1st Steve Dolton 4-up ; 2nd Gerry Shaw 1-up; 3rd Alberto Barraclough 1-down (c/b).

Nearest the pin winners were John McHarg (7th in 2) and Alberto Barraclough (16th).

Seniors' October Medal

With the grounds work going on later in the week, the Seniors’ Medal was switched to Monday, 21 October which resulted in a much smaller entry than normal with 47 playing.

The best score of the day was 76 from Kevin Crumell, giving him a nett 68 but he was beaten in Division one by Alberto Barraclough whose 84 gave him a nett 66. In Division two, David Musson playing in the last official competition of his captaincy won the Division on countback.

Division one - 1st Alberto Barraclough 84 – 18 66; 2nd Kevin Crumell 76 - 8 68; 3rd Peter Marsh 85 – 16 69.
Division two; 1st David Musson 92 – 22 70 (c/b); 2nd Alan Bowers 91 – 21 70; 3rd Bob Thiele 92 – 21 71.

Who had a pair of these?

I'm sure the shoes below will make a lot of you smile. It's been a long time since golf shoes looked like the first image and it's safe to say that comfort, style and traction have all come a long way since then - even if some of us think the overlapping tongues looked great!

Old style shoes

It wasn't just the daring uppers and striking tongue that defined golf shoes from yesteryear; flip the shoes upside down and the hard leather outsole featured single metal spikes that resembled weapons more so than traction pods.
