Competition news

Captains Cup

In what must be a record for the Captains Cup Greensome Pairs Competition, a total of 40 teams took part in a very closely contested competition. In the end, the winning team of Eddie Birney and Sean Glynn came out on top on countback with a nett score of 63.6 ahead of Andy Adkins and Clive Dickenson.

Top three were:

First place - Eddie Birney and Sean Glynn - nett 63.6 (CB).
Second place - Andy Adkins and Clive Dickenson - nett 63.6.
Third place - Sandy Bolton and Mark Du Plessis - nett 64.2.

Summer Opens

Last week saw the return of the Summer Opens on Friday and Saturday with the top five all receiving pro shop vouchers (1st £75, 2nd £50, 3rd £35, 4th £25 and 5th £15).

On Friday a field of 62 players took part (56 members and six visitors) CSS 38 points.

Top five:

First place - Mark Du Plessis 43 points.
Second place - Sam Chick 42 points.
Third place -Paul McNulty 40 points (CB).
Fourth place -Adam Woodley 40 points (CB).
Fifth place - Gary Quainton 40 points (CB).

Visitors top two:

First place - Graham Marshall - 33 points (Peterborough Milton GC).
Second place - Yim Kong - 32 points (Nene Park GC).

On Saturday a field of 79 players took part (73 members & 6 visitors) CSS 37 points.

Top five:

First place - Gez Pearce - 42 points.
Second place - Todd Parker Hunt - 40 points.
Third place - Graham Fullagar - 39 points (CB).
Fourth place - Anthony Lamb - 39 points (CB).
Fifth place - Mark Kimber - 39 points (CB).

Visitors top two:

First place - Mark Airs - 40 points (Chipping Sodbury GC).
Second place - Jay Hunting - 39 points (Mill Ride GC).

All the Summer Open scores go towards an order of merit series. This will be the best three out of six competition scores. Based on the cumulative total of the best three Stableford points scores from a possible six.

Summer Series 4 - Saturday, 8 August

Ladies news

Ladies EG Medal

In the ladies EG Medal on Tuesday, 25 players took part (CSS 73).

Top three were:

First place - Angela Marshall - nett 71.
Second place - Julia Marcks - nett 72.
Third place - Libby Koivio - nett 73 (CB).

In the Ladies EG Medal on Saturday, 25 July, Margaret Moggridge won with a fine score of nett 72.

Junior news

British Junior Golf Tour

This Sunday, we are proud to be hosting the British Junior Golf Tour for the first time (event sold out!) – the largest junior golf tour in the UK, operating junior golf events across the country.

BJGT events are fun, competitive, affordable and open to young golfers of all abilities, aged 5 up to 17 years. 9 and 18 holes - age and distance-related strokeplay competitions, as well as 18 holes handicap-qualifying gross and net strokeplay competitions.

Time to update your wedges?

That moment when you pitch the ball close to the pin and stop it on a dime for a tap-in putt is like no other. It dramatically reduces your score whilst looking awesome. As with all shots, it requires both technique and confidence, not to mention wedges with sharp grooves.

A recent survey highlighted that a third of golfers carry wedges that are over five years old. We appreciate that everyone has a club or two in their bag that they love but grooves will gradually deteriorate over time.

This European Tour challenge is pretty simple: pick your favourite club and play the entire hole with it. Close House was the venue ahead of last week's British Masters, but how did the players get on? There were certainly a few surprises!
