Wednesday 17th & Thursday 18th April: Seniors Stableford

This month's Stableford was played over the usual two days with very different conditions. It was very windy on Wednesday and completely the opposite on Thursday. The Thursday players definitely had the better conditions and took full advantage of this with two scores of 40 and above with Anthony Mawson bringing home the win with a very good haul of 41 points.

In total there were 100 entrants, 49 playing in division 1 and 51 playing in division 2. The top six in each division were as follows:

Division 1: 1st - David Scott (39 pts), 2nd - Clive Dickenson (38 pts), 3rd - Andrew Swanston (37 pts) , 4th - Steve Beahan (37 pts), 5th - Keith Stenning (37 pts), 6th - Cliff Moss (36 pts)

Division 2: 1st - Anthony Mawson (41 pts), 2nd - Stephen Hewer (40 pts), 3rd - Trevor Richards (39 pts), 4th - Trevor Smith (38 pts), 5th - Anthony Bastable (37 pts), 6th - Brian Causby (36 pts)

There were 2 twos recorded as follows:

Mark Kimber and Tom O'Donovan.

Wednesday 15th April: Seniors Match v Cherwell Edge (Home)

The home match versus Cherwell Edgeended with a win for Kirtlington by 4 matches to 2. In contrast to the situation when we played Drayton a couple of weeks ago, it was our opponents who fielded the lowest handicap player in each group, and we duly took full advantage of the handicap shots on offer. The points were scored for Kirtlington by Tony Bastable and David Grimshaw (2 & 1), Denis Gaiger and Mike Firth (5 & 3), Mike Chamberlain and Keven Kavanagh (6 & 4), and Clarrie Haynes and Peter Owen-Smith (4 & 3).

The match was played in an excellent spirit with plenty of banter on offer. Congratulation to Denis Gaiger for securing the bottle of wine with nearest the pin on the 16th - a lovely looking shot towards the pin in the tricky back right position. Special mention must also be made of Tony Bastable who, after a conventional birdie on the first by holing a 10 foot putt, then nearly holed his tee shot on the 4th and subsequently his second shot on the 8th for 2 further birdies - both 12 inch tap-ins. With Tony’s 3 birdies in 8 holes, Ade Bird from Cherwell Edge responded by birdying the 5th (again a virtual tap-in) and the 7th (albeit with a monster putt). Fortunately I had an opportunity with a much easier 8 foot birdie putt on the 7th to halve the hole. Unfortunately I missed it…
